I saw a video on Google+ that discussed how to use Lightroom 5 to manage your images. It turns out that the methods described also work in Lightroom 4. I have Lightroom set up to put images into folders by day on which it was shot and all of the folders are collected into a folder labeled by the year. This can result in up to 365 folders to search through.
Based on what I saw in the video, I rearranged all of my photos for the year into 12 folders labeled by month. The screen shot below shows the results.
